The Blue Lagoon, Iceland is one of the most famous destinations and the healing properties of the milky blue water draws visitors from all over the world. Soaking in the geothermal waters of this popular attraction is something that many people have on their bucket list, and if it’s on yours and you’re planning a visit, here’s a list of common questions you might have and some information to answer them:

What exactly is the Blue Lagoon?

The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa known for its cloudy blue water set against the black volcanic rocks. The water retains its bright color due to the high concentrations of silica, and other significant substances that are found in the water include salts and algae. The silica takes the form of a white mud-like substance that you can rub on yourself while soaking in the water.

The lagoon is man-made, and the water source is the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power station, which first opened in 1976. The geothermal pools were formed shortly after that, and once a man suffering from psoriasis found relief after bathing in the water, people began to flock to the area. The first bathing facility was opened in 1987 and the rest is history!

What can you do at the Blue Lagoon?

The most popular activity for visitors to the Blue Lagoon is to simply soak in the hot water and enjoy its natural therapeutic properties. You can select from a variety of masks and use some of the Lagoon’s own skincare products, or grab a smoothie, fruit juice, beer, or wine at the swim-up bar. There are some experiences you can also partake in for an extra fee such as a massage.

How much is a trip to Blue Lagoon?

The cost of soaking at the Blue Lagoon varies depending on which package you select. Regardless of which option you pick, you must book your spot in advance and it’s at that point where you can select either the Comfort package, the Premium package, or the Luxury Spa experience.

The Comfort package costs $45 and includes admission into the lagoon, a silica mud mask, a towel, and one drink. When you book, you select your arrival time and can purchase any add-ons (such as a water massage for $132) at that time. Regardless of your arrival time, you can stay at the lagoon until closing.

The Premium package costs $68 and includes everything the Comfort package includes plus a few extras: you get a second mask of your choice in addition to the silica mud mask, slippers, a bathrobe, and a reservation at the Lava Restaurant that includes a glass of sparkling wine.

The Luxury Spa Retreat costs $372 and includes access to the main portion of the Lagoon, but you can also get a more quiet experience in the Retreat Lagoon as well. You can choose multiple skincare treatments, drinks, and participate in the Blue Lagoon Ritual – a series of silica, algae, and other mineral-based treatments. If you choose this option, you get access to the Spa Restaurant and can enjoy any of the smoothies, juices, and other healthy options. The Lava Restaurant and the Moss Restaurants are also available to you as they would be if you booked any other package.

What is the best time to visit the Blue Lagoon in Iceland?

As with many popular tourist attractions, the best times to visit are the least popular times so you can avoid crowds. In this case, the best time would be early morning or late evening. The Blue Lagoon is open year-round and you’ll have a great experience whether you visit during the summer or winter. You’ll have more of a chance of pleasant warmth and bathing under the sun if you visit in the summer, but the sharp contrast of the hot water and the crisp winter air is appealing to many.

How long do you need at the Blue Lagoon?

You can easily make your trip to the Blue Lagoon a half-day excursion, or you can extend the trip and indulge in the luxurious experience for several days.

Can you stay and where to stay in Blue Lagoon?

The Blue Lagoon is a great option for both day trips and overnight stays. Choose between the Silica Hotel and the Retreat Hotel – both hotels offer serene accommodations with views of the cloudy blue lagoon or the rocky lava fields. These sleek and modern accommodations include suites, access to the Retreat Lagoon, and opportunities to participate in hikes, yoga sessions, and other activities.

Alternatively, stay in the city of Reykjavik and transfer to Blue Lagoon by bus, taxi or rent a car. The journey is only about 45 minutes and you have more hotel options to choose from.

What are the dining options at the Blue Lagoon?

There are three restaurants and one cafe available at the Blue Lagoon, each with a variety of fresh and satisfying options. You’ll likely need to make reservations for the restaurants, but the cafe has plenty of grab-and-go options that are quick and easy. The Spa Restaurant is available to you if you book the Luxury Spa Retreat package, and you can try healthy options such as fruit juices and smoothies. The Lava Restaurant is a gourmet dining experience showcasing the best seasonal and local ingredients in a variety of Icelandic dishes. The restaurant is built into an 800-year old lava cliff and is an incredible place for an unforgettable dining experience.

The Moss Restaurant is a Michelin Recommended restaurant where you can enjoy a carefully curated menu while experiencing stunning views. This restaurant also offers a vegan menu, and you can book the Chef’s Table experience if you’re interested in learning more about the culinary triumphs of the Moss Restaurant.

The visit to the Blue Lagoon, Iceland is an incredibly worthwhile experience. Not only do you have the opportunity to experience a stunning sight, but you can benefit from the therapeutic properties of the beautiful blue water. It’s located within ten minutes of the Reykjavik Airport and downtown Reykjavik itself which makes it an easy detour to add to your Iceland itinerary. No matter when you are visiting, the Blue Lagoon is an incredible place to be.
