Although Prague is a fantastic travel destination, there are many places in the Czech Republic that are well worth a visit. Here are ten of the best Czech towns to visit besides Prague.

1. Kroměříž

This historic town is a can’t-miss destination on your vacation to the Czech Republic! Although the town was established in 1260, the buildings you’ll see today in Kroměříž date back to the 17th century when a significant portion of the town was rebuilt after damage caused by the Thirty Years War. When you’re in town be sure to visit the Kroměříž Castle, a structure that was once the principal residence for bishops and archbishops in Olomouc. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 due to its well-preserved Baroque gardens.

2. Český Krumlov

Nestled on the banks of the  Vltava River, the charming town of Český Krumlov is one of the best Czech towns to visit besides Prague if you’re looking for a place to spend several days, if not longer. It’s considered to be a popular day trip spot so there are several areas that do see an influx of tourists during the day but if you stay for an extended amount of time you’ll be able to see the local culture up close. Your time in Český Krumlov is best spent exploring the historic city center (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and simply wandering through the picturesque town.

3. Liberec

Located along the picturesque Jizera Mountains, the town of Liberec is an ideal destination for those who love winter sports or simply love the winter season. You can ski and snowboard here, and you can even try options like ski jumping! If you’re not interested in that variety of winter sports, you can hike through the mountain trails and enjoy the stunning views. In addition, Liberec boasts several museums, a zoo, and beautiful botanical gardens.

Popular Hotels in Liberec:

4. Litoměřice

Located on the banks of the Elbe River, the historic town of Litoměřice has plenty to offer including a fantastic selection of wineries! The climate of the region combined with the lessons learned over nearly a thousand years of winemaking has led to some of the best wine production in the country. You can head to the town’s Gothic castle where you can not only admire the historic architecture but can sample some of the rich vintage wines available in Litoměřice.

Hotels in Litoměřice:

5. Olomouc

Olomouc is a beautiful town in Moravia, a historic region in the eastern portion of the Czech Republic. Despite Olomouc’s reputation as a culturally and historically significant town that was once the capital of Moravia, the town doesn’t see a large number of visitors so you’ll have a great opportunity to experience the authentic local culture. You can visit the serene Hradisko Monastery – make sure you visit on Thursday if you want to see the interiors of this historic structure. Olomouc’s Town Hall is also well worth a visit, as is the astronomical clock on the north side of the building. This clock was built in the 1400s and has gone through several changes throughout the city’s history.

Hotels in Olomouc:

6. Tábor

The town of Tábor is located in the southern portion of the country. You can climb the bell tower of the church in Zizka Square to soak in some incredible views. Not only do you get to see a unique view of the town, but you’ll get to see the interiors of the church and climb a historic spiral staircase. Another unique feature of Tábor is the networks of underground tunnels and some sections are open to the public. You can head to the town hall which is also located in Zizka Square to find the entrance to a small section of these tunnels that you can walk through to learn about the city’s history.

Hotels in Tabor:

7. Telč

Known for its classic Italian Renaissance architecture, the town of Telč is another fascinating destination on this list. Once a prosperous stop along a larger trading route as well as a successful producer of farmed goods, this town is a unique glimpse into the history of the region. The homes that line the town square are brightly colored and ornately decorated by the homeowners who lived there in the 14th century. The designs are customized to each property and you can learn a little bit about the homeowners by looking at the patterns and symbols carved into the faces of the buildings.

Hotels in Telc:

8. Kutná Hora

Located in the central region of the Czech Republic, the town of Kutná Hora is a popular destination for many reasons. One of the biggest reasons is the ossuary at the Sedlec Abbey. This small chapel is located under the abbey and is notable for being decorated with bones and fragments from anywhere from 40,000 to 70,000 individuals. Often referred to as the “Bone Church” the Sedlec Ossuary is one of the most visited tourist sites in the entire Czech Republic.

Hotels in the City Center:

9. Holašovice

The small historic village of Holašovice is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in itself and is an ideal place to visit if you’re interested in the history of the country as the reason the village received the UNESCO designation is that it’s incredibly well preserved. It’s also a real village – people live in the 23 houses that are included in the town and small businesses like coffee shops that are present throughout the village are real too.

Hotels in Holašovice:

10. Karlovy Vary

The town of Karlovy Vary is a unique destination for two reasons, both relating to water. Firstly, there is a canal that runs through the city. Although the canal isn’t used as a means of transportation as much these days, walking along the waterway can be a picturesque experience. Secondly, there are a series of hot springs throughout the town that are quite popular. The town is one of eleven UNESCO recognized “Great Spa Towns of Europe”. Many have visited the spas throughout history, including notable composer Ludwig van Beethoven.
