Table of Contents

Heading to Montenegro? While countless destinations in the Balkans invite tourists from all over the world, there’s something special about Montenegro. Perhaps it’s because this destination is home to some of the most stunning natural landmarks, or maybe it’s because Montenegro is culturally rich, but if there’s one place in the Balkans you can’t miss, it’s Montenegro. And let’s face it, when you’re traveling, you need the best of the best, so we’re listing the most beautiful and best places to visit in Montenegro. Let’s get started:

1.  Kotor

Kotor is the most popular destination in Montenegro, and you’ll know why before you’ve even stepped into the place. Kotor Bay is counted among one of the most stunning places in the world, so it’s definitely worth the trip. Kotor isn’t just one of the best places to visit in Montenegro; it’s dubbed the Norway of the South, all because it’s filled to the brim with serene destinations, adventurous activities, and cobbled streets that serve as the perfect romantic spot. Interestingly, the best way to explore Kotor is walking around; you’ll find plenty of fun destinations, like the city market, that might not sound too interesting, except it’s fun, cultural, and brings heaps of delicious food. You can also see the gate to Kotor and climb the fortress wall, or hop back to Kotor’s UNESCO-listed Old Town and learn about its charming history.

2.  Stari Bar

By Dudva

If you’re looking for one of the best places to visit in Montenegro, you can’t miss Stari Bar. Stari Bar is an amorous small town nestled in the foothills of Mount Rumija, and makes for a fun trip. Don’t confuse Stari Bar with Bar, another town close by! If we’re talking about exploring Stari Bar, you’ve got to start with the Old Fortress, an iconic structure that has stood the test of time. When you’re done giving yourself a tour, stroll the cobblestone streets and pop by a local cafe for some Montenegrin delights. You’ll also find several ancient mosques; what makes them special is that many of them were once cathedrals, so it’s an interesting view for architecture buffs.

3. Perast

Perast is unarguably one of the best places to visit in Montenegro. This charming fishing town is just a stone’s throw away from Kotor, so you can even turn it into a day trip. Perast might be close to Kotor, but it’s surprisingly free from tourist footfall. This small town is perfect for a romantic stroll along the promenade; grab a cup of coffee and listen to the glistening waves crash on the shore. You can also take a small boat ride to the nearby Our Lady of the Rocks. If you’d rather stick to this idyllic town, we recommend catching the sunset; it’s worth the wait.

4. Lovcen National Park

How could we not mention the Lovcen National Park when we’re talking about the best places to visit in Montenegro? Lovcen National Park is the best viewpoint in the country, which, we know, might sound like quite the statement, but you’ll see it’s true. This is because Lovcen National Park is filled to the brim with scenic walking trails, dramatic hiking points, and dramatic scenery that makes you feel like you’re not even on Earth. That’s not all; since the Lovcen National Park sits atop a literal mountain, you’ll see all sorts of rich flora and fauna, truly adding to its charm. You can also visit the Lovcen Mausoleum close by.

5. Kolašin

Even the best places to visit in Montenegro can get a bit overwhelming with the tourist footfall, so if you’re looking for a place that’s equally enthralling, and yet somehow tucked away, you must head to Kolašin. This dreamy town lies by the Moraca River and makes for an alluring and charming destination. Sitting 3000 feet above sea level, Kolašin is home to several natural landmarks, including the Bjelasica Mountain, with luscious greenery and dramatic meadows that make it one of the most beautiful and best places to visit in Montenegro. During winter, Kolašin becomes even more lively with countless chances to ski, so it’s every thrill-seeking tourist’s dream come true.

6. The Luštica Peninsula

The Luštica Peninsula isn’t just one of the best places to visit in Montenegro, it’s also among the most convenient. The Luštica Peninsula is just 20 minutes from an international airport, so you can even fly out directly. The peninsula is quite the looker; it’s lined with olive groves, maqui berry plants, and a stunning shore that attracts turtles to its bay. When you’re done exploring the grounds, visit the local town center and feast on some fine wine and delectable pršut. If you’d like to take the trip further, head out to Azra Beach and enjoy a fun day.

7. Lake Skadar

Ask anyone who’s been to Montenegro and they’ll recommend Lake Skadar; that’s how you know it’s one of the best places to visit in Montenegro. The largest lake in the Balkans, Lake Skadar, gets its fair share of tourists. And while you’d think that’d be a downer, the stunning view, the serene lull in the water, and the iconic boat rides will make you forget you’re there with other tourists. An interesting thing about Lake Skadar is that it borders the mountains along the Montenegrin-Albanian border, so you might actually get a cool mix of culture. Definitely make some time to visit Rijeka Crnojevica, an idyllic town that screams beauty.

8. Budva & Sveti Stefan

Even the best places to visit in Montenegro might need to lighten up a bit, and that’s exactly why you must visit Budva. This town is actually split into two parts: the Old Town of Budva is surrounded by an old city wall, while the newer part brings all the excitement and party. That means when you’re looking for a fun nightlife, you can hit the bars and party till your heart desires, and when you’re tired out, simply head to the old town for a more relaxing view. The neighboring Sveti Stefan serves as the perfect, quiet, idyllic spot; you can’t miss it!

9.  Ulcinj

Bordering Albania, Ulcinj is one of the most beautiful and best places to visit in Montenegro. While most destinations in the Balkans pride themselves on their culture, you’ll find Ulcinj embracing a little bit of flair from across the border, so it’s actually a fun and interesting place to be. Ulcinj is a seaside town, so you know you’re going to get your fair share of mouth-watering seafood here. It’s also considered a bird lover’s paradise because of the beautiful flocks of birds that fly above. The Ulcinj salt pans are even home to flamingoes, a rare and fun sight!

10. Durmitor National Park & Black Lake

Lastly, we’ve got Durmitor National Park, which takes you right into the heart of Montenegro’s finest views. From sprawling mountains to gushing geysers and endless hiking paths, Durmitor National Park is every naturalist’s calling. If you’re headed to Durmitor National Park, make sure you drive because the route through the Black Lake is considered one of the most scenic routes in the country.
