1. Gamti Mountain and Bovilla Lake

A popular hiking destination, Gamti Mountain is located approximately one and a half hours’ drive from Tirana. It might sound like an ordinary destination, but the lush greenery and the amazing view of Bovilla Lake nearby make it totally worth the trip.
The easiest way to get to Gamti Mountain on a day trip from Tirana is by driving. You can rent a car or join a tour group that takes you across some of the most beautiful views in the world. You can also skip the wheels altogether and hike there; there’s a carved path that guides tourists along, so you won’t be lost. It’ll take up a couple of hours, so maybe just combine the two by driving there and then starting the hike.
The best activity to do in Gamti Mountain is the hike itself. The 2.5 km trail is suitable for all fitness levels, making it perfect for a family trip. You’ll start below and make the ascent, all the way until you reach the stunning lake. There, you can choose between a variety of lakeside activities, including picnics, kayaking, spelunking, and boat rides.
2. Kruja/Kruje

Roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour from Tirana, the historic town of Kruja is one of Albania’s most iconic destinations, known for its hilltop castle and rich cultural heritage.
The best thing about taking day trips from Tirana to Kruja is that you’ll have every mode of transport available. If you’d like to cut the trip short, you can take a direct taxi, but it’ll be costly. If you want to drive there, stop by the nearest rental and get going. But if you’d like to admire the view and relax, we recommend taking the bus from the Regional Bus Terminal. Buses depart every hour and a half, so there’s nothing to worry about.
Kruje Castle overlooks the city and makes for an exciting destination. It features the Museum of Skanderbeg and the Ethnographic Museum, so you’ll have a fun trip. If you’re not in the mood for history, head to the Kruje bazaar to indulge in local delights and learn about the culture.
3. Cape of Rodon

If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway by the coast away from huge crowds, the Cape of Rodon is a great option. It’s about an hour and a half drive from Tirana. This beautiful rocky area extends into the Adriatic Sea and feels like a hidden gem, perfect for relaxation and taking in the surreal views.
Once you arrive, you can take a stroll up to the old Rodoni Castle, which dates back to the 15th century. From there, you can enjoy stunning views of the sea and soak up some history. There’s also a lovely walking path along the coast where you can discover quiet beaches and beautiful cliffs.
Be sure to bring some snacks and water with you, as there aren’t many shops nearby. It’s the perfect place to relax and spend a leisurely day by the sea.
4. Durrës

Less than 40 minutes by car or just under an hour by bus, Durrës is a seaside city on the Adriatic Coast, making it one of the easiest and most beautiful day trips from Tirana.
You can reach Durrës from Tirana in less than an hour by either car or bus. Buses to Durrës depart frequently from the Tirana Bus Terminal (North and South Albania), starting early in the morning and running until late evening. Taxis are also available but tend to be pricier.
Spend a day soaking up the sun at the beautiful Durrës Beach, which is right by the airport and bus terminal. The Venetian Tower of Durrës, the Durrës Amphitheater, and the National Archaeological Museum are also popular attractions for those interested in culture and history.
5. Pellumbas Cave

Head to the village of Pellumbas, and you’ll find a beautiful Karst cave nearby. The Pellumbas Cave might not sound like your ordinary destination on a day trip from Tirana, but once you’re there, it’s worth every minute.
You can reach Pellumbas Cave (Shpella e Zezë) from Tirana in about approximately a 35–45 minute drive, traveling southeast toward Elbasan and turning off near the Ibë village, then heading toward Pellumbas. Then you take a 2 km walk up to the trail that leads to the Pellumbas Cave.
The hike to the Pellumbas Cave from the village typically takes around an hour. You can spelunk, exploring the stalactites and the stalagmites, with hordes of bats flying around. If you’ve got the time, head back to the village and explore the local bazaar.
6. Berat

Nicknamed the City of a Thousand Windows, Berat is home to some of the most magnificent Ottoman-era architecture and makes for one of the most romantic day trips from Tirana. You can catch a direct bus from the Terminali i Autobusave të Jugut dhe Veriut, the earliest departing at 5:45 AM and taking about 2 hours to arrive.
Berat gets its nickname from two old neighborhoods built over opposite hillsides, overlooking the entire town, so it feels like you’re seeing thousands of glistening windows. Visit the UNESCO-listed Berat Castle, wander the cobbled streets of the Old Town, and enjoy local cuisine with a view over the Osum River.
7. Ohrid, North Macedonia

Just under 2 hours away, the lakeside town of Ohrid in neighboring North Macedonia makes for a cross-border day trip full of charm and beauty.
Buses depart from Tirana to Ohrid from the TEG (Tirana East Terminal at the Tirana East Gate Shopping Center). These buses have specific departure timings, so make sure you book online. You can also drive directly from Tirana to Ohrid, but it’s best to consult a tour guide for the best experience.
Ohrid’s most prized destination is its namesake lake, and luckily, most buses reach close by. You can also visit the Old Town and the countless churches lining the town, especially the St. Naum Monastery, so it’s a fun trip for every history buff. If you’re looking for something different, head to the boardwalk and explore the nearby stores.
