It’s long been a cultural, political, and economic center within Europe, and was the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia which existed between the 12th and 18th centuries. Prague is filled with museums and incredible UNESCO World Heritage sites including Prague’s City Center. It’s easy for tourists to get around as the city boasts an extensive public transportation system so you can explore the city without renting a car or using taxis every time you need to get somewhere new.

Here is a list of the best neighborhoods to stay in Prague, depending on what it is that you want to do when you’re visiting:

Best Neighborhood for First-Timers: Staré Město

If you’re heading to Prague for the first time and you want to see as much of the city as you possibly can, stay in Staré Město! This neighborhood has incredible medieval architecture, museums, restaurants, and impressive public squares. It’s also a great place to go if you want to explore the city. Spend an afternoon traversing the cobblestone streets and stopping in small cafes and shops that interest you as you walk.

It’s noted for its history, and of course, you can visit the beautiful Prague Castle during your trip. Constructed in 870, this castle complex is currently the location of the official office of the Czech president, and it is also where the Bohemian Crown Jewels are housed.

Situated along the Vltava River in the north part of Prague, Holešovice was once a muted industrial district, but today is considered to be one of the coolest neighborhoods in Prague. It is also considered to be a creative hub within the city, which means there are plenty of interesting events to explore on a regular basis. If you and your partner want to see some cool art galleries or attend a live music show, Holešovice is a great option for you. Best Neighborhood for Families: Nové Město

The neighborhood of Nové Město, or New Town, is new by Prague standards, but it was actually established in the 14th century. It’s still full of history and culture and is a great place to stay with family, especially if you are traveling with young children or older relatives who might not want to stay near the noisier areas that are known for their nightlife. You can spend an afternoon visiting the National Museum which has something that will appeal to everyone in it’s collection of 14 million artifacts. New Town is also located near Old Town but typically accommodations can be found at a lower price which enables you to save money on hotels so you can spend it on activities, shopping, or a great meal. There are also several outdoor markets and parks throughout Nové Město, which can make for excellent places to stop and take a break throughout the day.

Best Neighborhood for Solo Travelers: Žižkov

Žižkov is one of the least touristy areas of Prague, which makes it a great place to visit if you are hoping to soak in more of the local culture and have a more laid-back trip. Although it does not necessarily have a thriving nightlife, especially when compared to areas like Anděl, there are more bars here per capita than most, if not all, other neighborhoods in Europe. Žižkov also has a large student population, which means that you will likely not be the only person wandering around the neighborhood alone. A neighborhood with a lot of students has it’s pros and cons, but one of the positives is the likelihood that you’ll be able to find some great deals when it comes to food and entertainment. Some might only be accessible to you if you are a student, but others may be available to anyone.

Best Neighborhood for Christmas Markets: Staré Město

Located in the central and popular neighborhood of Staré Město is the Old Town Market Square, which is where the Staromestske Namesti is held annually. The Staromestske Namesti is one of the largest and most popular Christmas markets in Prague and includes hundreds of stalls where you can buy food, drinks, and locally made goods. At the nearby Wenceslas Square, another Christmas market called the Vaclavske Namesti is held every December. This particular Christmas market features a daily tree lighting ceremony every afternoon at 5:00 PM. Like the Staromestske Namesti, the Vaclavske Namesti features a great number of food, drink, and craft stands where you can purchase a Christmas souvenir to take home so you will always remember your holiday trip to Prague.
