Istanbul is Turkey’s largest city and there’s plenty to explore for tourists who come to this economic, cultural, and historic center. The city has a long history and was founded as Constantinople in 330 CE. The name was later changed to Ankara and then Istanbul when Turkey gained independence in the early 1900s.

If you’re hesitant about visiting Turkey, and Istanbul in particular, there are many benefits to spending time in this historic region. Istanbul  is also as safe as any other major city and English is quite commonly spoken throughout. Just be aware that Turkey is more conservative than other countries in Europe and behavior such as public drunkenness or public displays of affection are best avoided while visiting. That said, Istanbul sees a high number of tourists from all walks of life and the average citizen is used to seeing people who are visiting from elsewhere.
